Sure you could just press the hook in to the cork handle, but doing so will damage the cork which is never good. Some rods come with hook keeps built in to the reel seat, But some of the flies I use have stingers in & I don’t like the idea of a hook so close to my hand while carrying my rod.
This nifty wee gadget will solve that problem for you, easy to fit and comes with 2 bands to accommodate most rod diameters. For those of you Tenkara folk, fit two of these and create somewhere to keep your line while moving spots.
